Removing Wallpaper

This can be messy, so use drop cloths and plastic sheeting to protect furniture and collect the mess. Surprisingly, fabric softener is the secret ingredient for easily removing old wallpaper and borders. Mix 50% water and 50% fabric softener in a large spray bottle. Spray a small area to test, letting it soak for about 10 minutes. Based on your test area, spray a section that you can complete in about 15 minutes. Strip the wallpaper from the bottom up. A wide putty knife may be helpful. Once the paper is removed clean the walls with a light solution of dish soap and water (1 tablespoon soap to 1 gallon of water). Then rinse with clean water. Your walls are now ready for new wallpaper or paint.
