Walls

You can build a typical wall, 8' x 8', in a couple of hours with basic skills using a measuring tape, saws and hammers. Build the wall laying horizontal on the floor and stand it in place once completed. The wall consists of a 2" x 4" or 2" x 6" frame with wall studs running vertically every 16", on center.

Building A Basic Wall

Begin by measuring and cutting the frame pieces. Note that the height should allow for one thickness of 2' x material which will be mounted to the floor below the wall frame. Assemble the frame using 16-penny nails. Check to see that the wall will fit the intended space by setting it in place. If all fits fine, return to the assembly area to complete the wall. On the lower and upper frame boards measure and mark positions for the vertical studs. Measure and cut the studs. Install the studs using 16-penny nails.

If the wall will contain electrical or plumbing, consider your options for these items now. Visit the electrical and plumbing sections for more information.

Once the wall structure is complete, it is ready for drywall, paneling or other wall surface materials.
