Trim Molding

Installing crown molding, cove molding, baseboard molding, chair rail molding and all types of trim molding add the finishing touches to a room. Selecting the right type of molding is the first step. Once you determine the correct type of molding you will want to decide how you will finish it. If it will not get heavy contact, softer woods will work fine. Chair rail moldings hold up better if they are a harder wood.

Learning how to cut crown molding and install crown molding will add a professional look to the project. Trim molding is intended to hide rough joints and put finishing touches on walls, windows and other construction materials. Practice cutting and joining corner pieces before attempting to make final cuts.

After molding is installed, use a nail set to drive nailheads below the durface of the molding. Use appropriate fillers to finish corners, joints and nail heads. A final sanding and you're ready to paint or stain and varnish.
