Deck Plans - Designs For Building Decks

Adding a deck can enhance the appearance and function of your patio deck area. The right deck design can make all the difference. Turn your idea into a finalized deck design and build the patio deck of your dreams.

Like all home improvement projects, the deck begins with an idea. Create a rough plan drawing of the space available and add measurements of all existing elements that will be incorporated into the design. Consider traffic flow, seating areas and where you might place items like barbecues, umbrellas and deck furniture. You can place any existing furniture in place on the ground where you plan to build the deck. This will help you visualize the end product. This will also help you identify where steps and railings would be best located. You may even want to consider a multi level deck.

Once you know the size of the deck, calculate the spans to determine the beam size requirements for construction. Ask your lumber supplier for span strength for the type of you you plan to use.

A well-drained foundation keeps the deck sturdy and stable. Consider where you would like the water to drain when it rains and incorporate this into your plan. It must drain away from the deck but you dont want the water draining through your only entrance/exit.

Above ground wood decks need railings for safety and the railings should be sturdy enough to withstand several adults leaning against them. It will happen.

Consider electrical requirements for lighting, outlets and outdoor heaters. Determine where the power will originate from and how you will route it to all connection points.

You can get free deck building plans and designs in magazines, library books and on the internet. See deck plan suppliers below.
